A clinical trial is a controlled experiment, not a distribution channel. Every participant has to match a protocol written before recruitment opened, because the study is measuring an effect in a defined population. Admitting people outside that definition would damage the result the trial exists to produce.

That is why enrolment runs through screening rather than registration. You express interest, a study team assesses you against the protocol, and most applicants are excluded. Exclusion is not a judgment about you; it means your circumstances fall outside what this particular study is measuring.

What eligibility criteria actually cover

Every study publishes its criteria in full on its registry record, and they fall into four groups. Reading them before contacting a site saves everyone time, because the last two rule most people out before anything medical is considered.

• Inclusion criteria: age range, body mass index thresholds, diagnosis status and other conditions you must meet
• Exclusion criteria: medications, prior treatments, existing conditions, pregnancy, or recent participation in another study
• Location: you generally need to reach a study site repeatedly over months, which rules out most people geographically before anything else does
• Commitment: scheduled visits, tests, questionnaires and record-keeping for the full study duration

How to read a registry record

ClinicalTrials.gov is the authoritative US registry. Each study has an NCT identifier, and the record carries recruitment status, eligibility criteria, locations, contacts and the sponsor. Outside the US, the EU Clinical Trials Information System and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform serve the same purpose.

Recruitment status is the field that matters first. Recruiting means sites are actively enrolling. Active, not recruiting means the study is running but closed to new participants. Completed means it has finished. Several of the large retatrutide Phase 3 studies have progressed past recruitment, so the practical set of open studies is smaller than the number of trials you will read about in the news.

Use only the contact details inside the official record. A study team can tell you whether a site near you is open and what screening involves. No third party can enrol you.

What participation involves

Screening comes first: a visit, medical history and tests to confirm eligibility. Informed consent is a documented process, not a form you skim, and it covers known risks, what is unknown, what is expected of you and your right to withdraw at any point without giving a reason.

Most studies of this kind are randomised, which means you may receive placebo rather than the investigational compound, and in blinded studies neither you nor the site staff knows which. If your reason for joining is to obtain retatrutide, a trial is a poor route to it. You may spend months receiving nothing active.

Participants do not buy the investigational drug. Study treatment and protocol-required care are provided, and some studies reimburse travel. That is a consequence of participating in research, not a purchase.

How to recognise something that is not a trial

Genuine trials are unhurried, free to join, and documented publicly. The registry record is the check: if the study exists, its record will confirm the sponsor, the sites and the recruitment status.

• A fee to enrol, to be matched, or to be placed on a priority list
• A guarantee of acceptance, or of receiving the active compound rather than placebo
• Enrolment through a seller of research material, a telehealth funnel or a social media account rather than a registered study site
• No NCT number, or an NCT number whose registry record does not match what the site claims
• Pressure to decide quickly, which is the opposite of how informed consent is meant to work

If you are not eligible

Ineligibility for one study does not close the subject. Registry records are updated, new studies open, and eligibility criteria differ between protocols. Searching the registry periodically is more useful than pursuing any single trial.

It is also worth being clear about what a trial is not. It is not a way to obtain an unapproved compound, and material sold under a research label is not the trial product. Questions about your own treatment belong with a qualified clinician who knows your history.
